Winter Solstice - December 21st, 2008 : A first day of winter hike of Moosilauke turned into a 1 mile venture up the Glencliff trail and back. I was not feeling on top form and with cold temps and a fierce storm developing summiting was very unlikely.

The Sugarloafs - November 28th, 2008 : A great little hike to follow up a fine Thanksgiving dinner at the Highland Center the previous evening.
The Sugarloafs deliver a lot for not too much effort but on this day we traded views for a warm up winter experience. Of course, by the time we returned to the car the blizzard conditions had been replaced by sunshine and clear skies. No matter, a fun hike and blew a few cobwebs away.

A Walk in the Snow - November 22nd, 2008 : After a restless night I started into a hike of Pierce with little enthusiasm. Shortly after starting up the Crawford Path I slipped on the ice and fell hard - this did nothing to improve my attitude. Shortly before reaching the Mitzpah Cutoff I called it a day and turned back. It was cold, winds were string and there was little prospect for views.
Still, I got some fresh air, a little exercise and some time walking in snow :)

North Twin - November 1st, 2008 : A truly solo hike of North Twin. Never saw another soul all day.
Brisk to start and windy and cool up top. Winter above 3,500 ft and with little snow cover the ice can be tricky. Nice day out.

Wendy's Baxter Bash II - October 3-5, 2008 : Wendy's Baxter Bash II ran for a full week this year but I was only able to attend for the weekend. Almost a 900 mile round trip for one day of hiking but we are talking Baxter State Park in Maine and the best company one could ask for.

An early taste of winter closed the main peaks with accumulating ice and snow so a group of us climbed South Turner for some pretty nice views and a good cowbweb cleansing by some stiff winds.

Unfortunately Nilsa, HikerAmiga, slipped and broke her leg while doing the same hike later in the day. Available members of our group, with the assistance of members of the Harvard Outing Club and other hikers, formed a rescue team and completed the first stage of Nilsas rescue using a camp cot as a stand in litter. The rangers were alerted and we were met by a search and rescue team who transferred her to a proper litter and coordinated the final evacuation.

The selfless offering of assistance by friends, strangers and professionals was heartwarming to witness. Nilsa herself was an inspiration and her only words of concern were for her rescuers having to endure wet and muddy conditions and not once for herself.

Heal well and soon Nilsa!

Black Mountain (Benton Range) : February 2nd, 2008
What was supposed to be a short, easy hike up a small mountain turned out to be quite as gruelling as a major hike.
An ice storm the night before followed by a little snow made the trail quite slick. I also forgot to pack additional traction aids like the spiders or crampons and the snowshoes we had were overkill for the snow and awkward to handle on the steep, icy, rocky sections.
A damn good workout for a four mile hike though!

Mountain Park and Whiting Street Reservoir, Holyoke MA : January 12th, 2008
Kaboose and I take the local air with a trip to the site of the old Mountain Park amusement area and defunct Mt Tom Ski area.
The amusement park is all but razed to the ground but the ski trails and buildings are in particularly good shape.
Finished up with a loop around the reservoir, A great little trip with a massive 130 feet of elevation gain over four and a smidge miles.

Jefferson via Jewell and 4,900ft Contour Whack : January 5th, 2008
Marking Ivy's 46 of the winter 4ks we have a great weather day for our hike of Jefferson.
To save elevation gain we take the 4,900ft contour whack from the Jewell towards Sphinx col.
Lots of spruce traps on the way out but much easier on the return.
